4. Policy Guidelines

4.1 Mid-course Feedback Criteria

4.1.1 All required M1-M3 core courses/clerkships which are four weeks or longer will
provide mid-course feedback toward relevant competencies. This includes the provision of narrative feedback and scored outcome measures at mid-course and in the final grade report.

4.2 Pre-Clerkship

4.2.1 For pre-clerkship courses, this will include (1) a summary of academic performance in the course to date, including indication of whether performance is currently satisfactory or unsatisfactory and (2) narrative comments addressing students’ performance. Feedback may also include other descriptors, as determined by the course director. Individualized documentation containing this feedback must be delivered to students.

4.3 Clerkship

4.3.1 During M3 core clerkships that are four weeks or longer, faculty will provide competency-based feedback to students at the mid-point of the clerkship. This will include (1) a summary of academic performance in the course to date, including indication of whether performance is currently satisfactory or unsatisfactory and (2) narrative comments addressing students’ performance. Feedback may also include other descriptors, as determined by the clerkship director.

4.3.2 Feedback will be accomplished through an in-person or virtual meeting with the clerkship director, or designee, in addition to documentation of narrative feedback.

4.4 Narrative Feedback

4.4.1 Narrative descriptions of medical student performance are required in all core courses and clerkships when there has been sufficient direct observation of student performance or meaningful educational interaction with the student.

4.4.2 Narrative feedback must be incorporated into institutionally approved evaluation tools and provided as part of both mid-course formative feedback and final summative assessments.

4.4.3 In the pre-clerkship phase, narrative descriptions are captured through electronic assessments, competency-based assessments, standardized patient encounters, and formative OSCEs, and are reviewed with students during scheduled mid-course meetings and included in final course evaluations.

4.4.4 In the clerkship phase, narrative descriptions are captured through standardized competency-based electronic evaluations completed by faculty and residents following direct observation of clinical performance. Narrative feedback is reviewed with students during mid-clerkship meetings with the clerkship director or designee.
